DIY Glass Bottle Painting with Glass bottle art

For this project, I decided to use empty beer bottles to make trio of vases. You can display these bottles together or separately, with flowers or even without flowers. They’ll make great decoration for bookshelves or window sills also.

Supplies:

  • Chalk paint (ultra matte acrylic paint)
  • Paint brushes
  • Matte acrylic sealer (optional)
  • Real or fake flowers
You’ll also need to collect some empty bottles. (Maybe that’s part of fun?)

Note: You can use wine bottles too, but I prefer small size of beer bottles. They fit better and take less space.

For my paint colors, I used sage green, off-white and soft pink.

Step 1: Wash Bottles & Remove Labels

Soak the bottles in soap water to remove the labels. If the glue is too stubborn, you can use something like Goo Gone to get rid of that sticky part.

Step 2: Apply 2-3 Coats of Chalk Paint

Using a good brush, apply 2-3 coats of chalk paint on the bottle. Start painting from the bottom and slowly move towards the neck.

Chalk paint dries quickly, so you’ll need to paint fast. You can also paint the inside part of bottle neck just enough to cover that amber glass colour.

After you finish painting the bottle, I recommend painting the bottom part as well, though it doesn’t matter too much because no one will see the bottom anyway.

Step 3: Let the Bottles Dry Between Coats

While one bottle is drying, you can start on another one. Let the bottles dry for at least 2 hours before you apply the next coat of paint. If you try painting too early, the brush strokes will remove the paint below.

Step 4: Apply Acrylic Sealer (Optional)

After your bottles are completely dry, you can sand the paint to create a vintage look, or directly apply a spray sealer.

I used matte spray sealer to protect the paint and keep it from peeling. If you want a shinier look, you can use a high-gloss sealer.

Step 5: Add Flowers and Enjoy!

Finally, add some flowers! I used artificial stems I bought from Dollar Tree, but you can also use real flowers. Just be careful not to get the painted outside of the bottle wet.
