How to Shape Resin to Form a Bowl

Resin art is a fascinating way to create unique and beautiful pieces. One of the most exciting projects you can try is shaping resin into a bowl. Follow these simple steps to create your own abstract resin bowl!

Step 1: Get a Plastic Drop Cloth

Head to the painting section of any home improvement store to pick up a thick plastic drop cloth. The thicker the plastic, the easier it will be to peel the resin off once cured.

Step 2: Cut the Plastic

Cut a square of plastic about three times the size of the surface area you’ll be pouring the resin on. For shaping, select an object like a jar to serve as your bowl's template.

Use a sharpie to mark the plastic where the edges of the jar meet it. These marks will guide your pour, ensuring the resin stays within the desired area.

Step 3: Mix and Color the Resin

Mix about 3 ounces of artwork resin for this project. Choose artwork resin for its short curing time, which will allow you to shape the bowl faster. Leave some resin clear and add color to the rest. For this example, I chose a transparent yellow.

Step 4: Pour the Resin Onto the Plastic

Start by pouring the colored resin in the center of the marked plastic area. Follow the marks to guide your pour. Then, add a ring of clear resin around the colored center. Don’t worry about uneven pours—the abstract edges give the bowl its unique look.

Step 5: Remove Bubbles

Use a heat gun to carefully go over the surface of your resin and eliminate any bubbles. This step is essential for a smooth finish.

Step 6: Add Embellishments

Add some decorative elements like flowers or stones to the clear resin. This decoration adds texture and a pop of color to your final piece.

Step 7: Size the resin

Once the resin is partially cured (like rubber but still bendable), remove it from the plastic. Draw shapes around the chosen template (like a bottle) or press it by hand to make it abstract.

Step 8: Set Cure

To help the bowl retain its shape, box it up as it cools completely. You can use a barrel or other weight to keep the center down. Let the resin harden completely.

The finished cup

Voila ! You have your beautiful abstract resin bowl ready. It looks like a mirror and is perfect for adding a touch of art to your home or office. Hold small items like pencils and rubber bands or simply display them as decorative items.
